Undercover Boss

Like many of you (well, 38 million of you anyway), I watched the debut of Undercover Boss following the Super Bowl broadcast. Interesting premise – a CEO goes undercover at his own company to see how the “stuff” rolls downhill until it lands amidst the workers we see on the show.
On the show the CEO of Waste Management, a seemingly nice enough guy, got a taste of how the policies he sets forth get implemented. It’s like a big corporate game of telephone and he was looking to understand what came out the other end. What he found out was that even with the best of intentions (and we can debate for hours what came out in the editing room), policies often get screwed up on the way to reality.  And that’s what hit me throughout: Continue reading

Life On The Virtual Frontier

You’ve already had your foodie post for this week so I’m going to move on to something else today.  In fact, even if I had a great foodie post for you (which I don’t), the thing I want to write about is probably more important and hopefully more interesting in any event.

I’ve written before about the completely different way people are wired these days as a result of digital media.  Because of that, I doubt you have an extra hour and a half lying around, but if you do I would strongly urge you to watch the piece Frontline aired earlier this week.  It’s available online if you click here and it’s a great look a what’s happening to us all but especially to young people, as a result of how our lives have been altered by all the digital distractions around us. Raising Pulses

LAS VEGAS - JUNE 27:  Music artists Steve Winw...

When I use my treadmill, I’m a responsible guy and use a cardiac monitor at the same time. Can’t have the old guys over-doing it!  I also have a theory about not doing anything sans appropriate music.  With that in mind, I put on the CD from two other old guys – Steve Winwood and Eric Clapton. The toured together a while ago and have a live CD from the Madison Square Garden show – it’s really good.

So there I am cruising along at my usual pace and listening to the music.  All of a sudden, the treadmill starts slowing down and telling me “reducing speed to lower heart rate.”  I was doing my usual workout at a speed I hit all the time and yet for some reason, my heartbeat had elevated itself out of the acceptable range.  Not by much, but it was higher.  The culprit?
