Let’s play pretend. Pretend there is a team of people working on a web project together. The team has reached the very end of the build and is hoping to get it launched soon. Suddenly, one sector of the team decides they don’t like the way something looks and proposes a change. Making the change might make the product look nicer but it won’t affect the way it works. Welcome to 2010!
Happy New Year! To start us off, I read two reports over the holidays that I found interesting and which set the themes that I think will dominate media over the next year. Of course they are about media habits and how this convergence thing is becoming more of a reality to more people. Obviously it’s been here for quite some time but it’s just now becoming mainstream enough of a technology that “civilians” (non-digital media experts) don’t look at you cross-eyed when you start to discuss it. Snake Oil
“Social Media is crap.” That’s how I started a discussion at the Princeton Sports Symposium a couple of weeks ago. Of course, what I meant was that there is a focus on the tools of social by many businesses and a lack of understanding of the business reasons why anyone would be using these tools to further their business goals. I am happy, therefore to see that I’m not the only one seeing that, nor am I the only one who sees a bunch of charlatans masquerading as business experts in this space. Continue reading
