This was a big sports weekend. Baseball playoffs going (let’s go Yankees), the NFL is heating up, NASCAR is halfway through its championship series of races, college football is getting interesting (Michigan wins it all in 2010 – you’ll see!), The President’s Cup was contested (and was closer than the results would have you think), the US qualified for The World Cup, and the NHL is back in action. As I was watching almost all of the aforementioned sporting activity (now you know why I work in sports!), I got to thinking about one guy who is common to each of those teams. I’m not sure if this goes into the “well DUH” file or if it’s actually a good reminder. You’ll have to tell me. I’m talking about the FTC‘s publication of some new guides for bloggers with respect to disclosing relationships they may have with those companies or products they review. In a nutshell, bloggers are advised (they’re not actually rules or pay a fine) to say if they’re being given free product or paid somehow for their review by the reviewed entity. Those same standards don’t apply to “traditional” media such as newspapers. There is a good explanation of the arguments here and of course the blogosphere is buzzing but to me it’s a whole lot of “so what.” Continue reading

Bulletin: Research Demos Common Sense
“Because I say so” is a line guaranteed to get you in trouble as a parent. It means you’ve reached the end of your rope in terms of logic and are resorting to the tried and true tactic of bullying. Having been there myself, I’m not criticizing – I’m just saying…
The reason I bring this up is that it sometimes we all use that line with respect to stuff we just know. It’s true because we say so but also because we just know. You just know Bruce is going to put on a good show (he did!). You just know no matter what one political party does the other one will criticize them (boring). And you just know that good customers get more angry with you when you screw up than do casual customers. Except today there’s some research that says so too. Continue reading
