The Tools

I got into one of those conversations a couple of weeks ago.  You know the ones:  something is so obvious to you and yet you don’t seem to make your point clearly.  No, the conversation wasn’t about politics although it does seem as if most political conversations would fit my description.  This one was about buying search ads but it just as easily could have been about Facebook, Twitter, or any number of other easily accessible digital tools.

At one point, the other party mentioned that they could do what I and a couple of others who are assisting them are doing on their behalf far less expensively either by doing it themselves or by hiring a “kid” part-time.  Putting aide that in essence a consultant is part-time help, I remembered the old joke about Henry Ford and Tesla identifying a problem area in 5 seconds – it’s $1 for making the mark and $9,999 for knowing where to make it.  A good thing to keep in mind and let me explain. Behold The Radish!

This week, as you might have guessed from the headline, our Foodie Friday Fun topic is the radish.  More specifically, the business lessons we can learn from using radishes in cooking.  If you’re like me, your exposure to radishes has been mostly through salads, at least for the most common variety, the red radish.  You might also have had daikon radish in Japanese food, and if you’re a fan of French eating you might even have smeared butter on a breakfast radish and eaten it to start your day.

If I asked you to describe the taste and texture of the radish, you’d probably say it was crisp and firm, with a sharp (it is a member of the horseradish family, after all) taste.  And that’s where the business point begins. Continue reading

Is On Your Own Right For You?

Today marks four years to the day that I’ve been without a real job. Oh, I have lots of work (although more is always appreciated – you know where to reach me!) but I haven’t held down the sort of job I had for the previous 30 years prior to that day. To commemorate the occasion, I’ll be lunching with the same group of friends who accompanied me that cold December day to welcome me into their world of self-employment. They’re lawyers, consultants, financial advisors – top-shelf professionals who decided that the rewards outside of corporate life outweighed the risks.
