Wine is food, right? So today’s Foodie Friday post is on a wine theme. I don’t profess to know much about really good wine but I do know enough to recognize when a wine is too young to drink. You can taste the tannins, the stuff from the stems and seeds of the grapes, which are bitter but which mellow over time. In fact, I’ve always thought that if a wine has the characteristics of being really good (nose, body, etc.) that noticeable tannins are a good thing – it means the wine is only going to get better. The Timer
I probably ought to be saving this post for Friday since what triggered it is a food thought. Then again, most of my thinking seems to be triggered by food thoughts as my waistline demonstrates.
One thing you must have in a kitchen is a timer. I have several, including one which can time 4 things at once (it’s very cool until you forget which time applies to what dish). You set a timer so that you know when things are done. That’s the big difference in digital – nothing’s ever done. Continue reading

The Silent Treatment
I was trained to teach high school English. If you want to try a presentation skills challenge, try presenting poetry structure to the non college-bound freshmen at 8:30 in the morning. You almost have to set yourself on fire to get their full attention and many mornings I had a can of lighter fluid in hand as I reached my wit’s end. But then I realized that all I had to do was shut up. Inevitably, the class would calm down and listen up, often to hear who was on their way to the dean’s office. Continue reading
