Earth Day

Today is Earth Day.   Some folks think it’s ridiculous although I’m not sure why.  These tend to be the same folks that are wondering why it’s so cold when “global warming” is supposed to be heating up the planet (see “What’s Your Name”).  In any event, since we have days to show our appreciation for Administrative Assistants, the UN, and a Groundhog, I think it’s probably OK to show a little love to the planet on which we live. The BOA

I leave tomorrow morning on an annual trip I take to Myrtle Beach.  In theory it’s a golf outing but it’s more of a 5 day stay in a rest home getting my batteries recharged.  13 of us go, 12 of whom play golf.  The other guy is a “social member” – most golf clubs have them – who enjoys the non-golf activities – cards, movies, and general guy banter.  Like “Fight Club“, the first rule is we don’t really talk about it.  However, what I can talk about that these are the guys whom I trust, to whom I can turn for advice, and who are honest – often brutally so – with me about everything from my golf game to my attitude.  For all of the social networking tools available out there, nothing beats the face to face contact with this group for me. The Confidence Game

I remember asking, somewhere along the line, what skills one needed to get into the sales department, where everyone seemed to be better paid and on an expense account (this was quite a while ago).  The answer was something along the lines of “an unwavering belief that your <poop> doesn’t stink and that everyone loves you.”  That came to mind over the weekend on the golf course and reminded me of one of the most important principles in success in both business and golf.
