Most of what shows up in our snail mail box is junk, bills, or magazines. However, once in a while something shows up which just compels me to share it. That happened the other day with the arrival of a “Rush Priority Express Letter.” It had to be important since it commanded the USPS to “Rush To Addressee” because it’s “Extremely Important.” Of course the colors of this missive are red, white and blue and there’s a picture of what appears to be an eagle (ornithology not a specialty here). Flogton
Sad news came this weekend with the passing of Seve Ballesteros. He was an inspiration to many golfers, including to me in a small way. Seve was renowned for hitting the ball into all kinds of horrible trouble and fearlessly trying to recover. Usually, he did just that and he won numerous titles playing from places many golfers didn’t even know were part of the golf course. That’s the inspiration to me although my success rate in recovering is a tiny fraction of what Seve’s was.
Seve showed a few things about golf to the world: that it builds character, that it’s really REALLY hard even for the best in the world, and that the greatest triumphs come after the greatest adversity. Which is why I find this morning’s report about Flogton in the Times so frustrating – and there’s a business point in there as well. Continue reading

The Masters Lesson
I’m sorry that I’ve not posted until late today although frankly I could have written this immediately after the conclusion of The Masters. If you love sports at all and didn’t watch the final round, shame on you because you really missed one of the best, most compelling afternoons I can remember in any sport. What struck me beyond that, however, was the huge difference between the man who has won 14 major championships and the kid who is still trying to win his first. The former put on a great performance that ultimately proved to be too little too late. The latter blew a lead and his chance to win and yet he taught the older guy a lesson. Continue reading
