The Space Shuttle landed this morning, bringing an end (for now) to the USA’s manned space program. I’m old enough to remember John Glenn’s first manned flight and how we used to gather as a school to watch the liftoff of each manned flight thereafter. It was exciting and inspirational to a young boy and remains so to a man in late middle age.
One thing we don’t hear enough about is all of the things we have today which are a direct result of that space program. It turns out that there’s a business point in there too. Continue reading

And Now For Something Completely Different…

I woke up this morning and landed in the midst of a major. Yep, it’s time for The Open Championship and there’s nothing like turning on the tube at 5:30 and seeing the world’s best golfers looking like…well…ME out there as they struggle with wind, rain, and a very different sort of golf. It’s the world’s oldest major championship and while I know that many of you care not a whit about either golf or sport, I do and I’m driving. Of course, there’s also a business lesson in here too. Quitters Never Win and…

I hope you watched the US Women play in the World Cup yesterday.  Even if you don’t care much for soccer or for sport in general, this was one of the most thrilling and uplifting things I’ve seen.  The US side, top-ranked in the world, played Brazil, the third-ranked squad.  The game had just about everything one could want – high levels of skill, some controversy to spice it up, and unbelievable drama that played out right to the final play.  As it turned out, for me there was a big business lesson as well.
