The Open

They’ve begun play in the Championship round of The U.S. Open.  Like The World Cup, the U.S. Open we see on TV is really the final round (or four rounds) of a tournament that began over a month ago (in soccer’s case we’re in the tournament now that concludes next summer).  The part I like best about this is neither that the courses make the best golfers in the world look like..uh..me nor the history.  What I like the best is that I can play. What Are We Doing

Today I’m raising a question for which I don’t really have an answer.  I guess it’s more of an observation and perhaps we can all figure out the answer together.

I’ve spent a good number of years in the sports business.  I love it because it’s a business about which people are passionate, both the folks who work in it and the fans who consume it.  But lately I’ve asked myself what we’re doing to those fans and I had a conversation the other day which really raised my level of concern. Learning to Ride

I’ve taught a couple of children how to ride a bicycle.  Maybe you have as well or maybe you can remember learning to ride yourself.  It’s a pretty complex thing – balance, speed, and a bunch of other things have to be dealt with if we’re going to avoid the trip to the medicine cabinet.  It’s really about courage at first – can I DO this – and then about trust after you make that first long run yourself (OK, it’s sort of about stopping during that first run!).
