Growing up, I used to follow boxing. It was pretty easy to be a fan – there weren’t a lot of weight classes, there was a single sanctioning body that mattered so there was only one champion in each weight class, and it was on free TV (although pay TV didn’t exist yet) every week. In short, it was simple and fan friendly. A high-quality product was made available each week and promoters and TV networks did everything they could to get me to watch.

I’m sorry that I’ve not posted until late today although frankly I could have written this immediately after the conclusion of The Masters. If you love sports at all and didn’t watch the final round, shame on you because you really missed one of the best, most compelling afternoons I can remember in any sport. What struck me beyond that, however, was the huge difference between the man who has won 14 major championships and the kid who is still trying to win his first. The former put on a great performance that ultimately proved to be too little too late. The latter blew a lead and his chance to win and yet he taught the older guy a lesson. Continue reading →

A friend of mine sent some of us in our golf group a photo of some clubs he is thinking of buying. The clubs were displayed with a sale price and his caption was “better golf through MasterCard?” It’s a common thought among golfers – I’ll just buy a better game. As one who is constantly in search of that elusive improvement, I’ve stood in many a golf superstore and felt exactly the same way.
As it turns out, the advice I gave him isn’t bad advice for business. You see, I’ve worked with companies who thought they could buy their way to a better game too. Let me share with you what I told my friend and I think you’ll see how it applies to the companies as well. Continue reading →
