Real Friends

I’m sure you’ve reconnected with some old friends via digital media. Seems like every on-line service – LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, you name it – wants to rummage through your address book or biography to hook you back up with those folks to whom you were once connected so that no good embarrassing moment goes unremembered.
I’ve connected with some of my peeps that I’ve known since we were single digits old. People with whom I spent nearly every waking hour – in school, at college, even at old jobs. At there’s one thing I notice almost every time that we start to reengage and I think it’s something from which businesses can learn. Continue reading

I love connecting.  I love that technology makes staying in touch and up to date so easy.  I think it’s great that years and miles melt away at the touch of a “send” or “post” button.  I just want to add one thing for you to keep in mind as you do so:  shut up.  OK, so maybe that’s a bit harsh, but here’s what I mean – think before you hit that button because I’m not so sure all of us do. Plan? I’m Wide Open

There’s a scene at the end of The In-Laws (the original, not the awful remake of a few years ago) when Sheldon and Vince are up against a wall facing a firing squad.  Shelly asks Vince for the plan – how are they going to escape?  Vince replies “Plan?  There is no plan.  I’m wide open” and it dawns on Shelly that they’re going to be shot.

That quote has stayed with me over the years because I can’t believe how often it’s appropriate in business.  The latest instance of this came just last week based on a survey by Digital Brand Expressions on corporations‘ use of social media. Continue reading
