They’ve begun play in the Championship round of The U.S. Open. Like The World Cup, the U.S. Open we see on TV is really the final round (or four rounds) of a tournament that began over a month ago (in soccer’s case we’re in the tournament now that concludes next summer). The part I like best about this is neither that the courses make the best golfers in the world look like..uh..me nor the history. What I like the best is that I can play. Continue reading

What Are We Doing
Today I’m raising a question for which I don’t really have an answer. I guess it’s more of an observation and perhaps we can all figure out the answer together.
I’ve spent a good number of years in the sports business. I love it because it’s a business about which people are passionate, both the folks who work in it and the fans who consume it. But lately I’ve asked myself what we’re doing to those fans and I had a conversation the other day which really raised my level of concern. Continue reading

The Mother of (Re)Invention
On my way out the door this weekend I grabbed the latest R.E.M. disc, Accelerate. I listened to it when it first came out a few months ago but had put it aside. In two words, it’s great.
