I was watching some streaming video the other day and of course there was an ad pre-rolling before the thing I wanted to see. Not an issue in my mind – trading 15 or 30 seconds of attention for free, high quality content is just fine with me.

But it did get me thinking. What I was watching was a repurposed TV ad – I’d seen it a few times on air already. Think about that – you wouldn’t open a magazine and see the creative from an outdoor board on the page. You wouldn’t run a radio ad on TV. So what is it about digital?

Unplugged

Kate the Desktop Computer

I have seen the future and it’s disconnected! From what? From the wall, from the wire, and maybe from you if you’re a content creator who’s not thinking ahead. I used to write this on my desktop PC; today I’m writing it on my laptop; tomorrow, I could be writing it on a tablet or my phone (which I do sometimes now in a pinch). Fortunately for me, the CMS I use (WordPress) has versions optimized for each device. It’s not quite so easy, however, if you’re producing content rather than software, especially video content, and that’s going to be a critical fix on your “to do” list if it’s not already. I Have A Life

OK, so maybe it’s not red carpets every night and maybe I don’t put on a tux or white dinner jacket each evening to dine. However, like most of you, I have a life. I have friends with whom I stay in touch beyond Facebook. I have business associates with whom I correspond beyond email. I sometimes need to express myself in more than 140 characters and sometimes people want to take what I have to say, give it some thought, and answer me back in a few sentences.  I have a family and occasionally we speak.  The funny thing is, it turns out I’m not the only person like this and the folks like me are of all ages.
