No One Cares About How

The start of a long weekend and time for a little food-related thinking. After all, what better way to celebrate our nation’s independence than firing up the grill and eating to excess?
Grilling is one of those food preparation methods that seems ridiculously simple but can be very challenging to perfect. In fact, I was thinking this morning about how a lot of the great food we eat seems so simple but can require hours of complicated prep to produce great results. The funny thing is that the response we often hear is “That’s pretty good,” not “I really like the way they moved the seared meat over indirect heat to generate a smoke ring while keeping it moist.”  The diners usually appreciate how it tastes without any thought as to how it’s made.  This, of course triggered a business thought I’d like to share. The Next Star

The Next Food Network Star

As you probably know, one of my favorite TV channels is The Food Network and since it’s Friday, I want to focus on one of their programs for our Foodie Friday Fun.  This is the seventh season of The Next Food Network Star which I think is a really interesting program for a number of reasons.  The biggest name to emerge from the show is the past winner Guy Fieri, who has become a star on NBC (Minute To Win It) as well as on a number of food-related shows but a few of the other winners, and runners-up, have continued on The Food Network and help to prove that the process works.  Can it work for you? What Looks Good

For today’s Foodie Friday Fun, I want to talk a bit about shopping. I don’t know how you shop for food but I generally don’t go with a list. Oh sure, at my age I write a bunch of stuff down so I don’t forget things that I need to buy but they tend to be the non-food items or staples for the pantry.  The menu is generally dependent on what looks good.  Of course I have a vague idea of what I want but I’m rarely married to a menu.  This drives the other shopper in the house (to whom I really am married) crazy, especially when she’s the one going to the store and the meal instructions are “buy what looks good.”
