Is On Your Own Right For You?

Today marks four years to the day that I’ve been without a real job. Oh, I have lots of work (although more is always appreciated – you know where to reach me!) but I haven’t held down the sort of job I had for the previous 30 years prior to that day. To commemorate the occasion, I’ll be lunching with the same group of friends who accompanied me that cold December day to welcome me into their world of self-employment. They’re lawyers, consultants, financial advisors – top-shelf professionals who decided that the rewards outside of corporate life outweighed the risks.

I’ve been very fortunate over the last four years to have done my entrepreneurial thing.  If you’re wondering if maybe you could be doing the same, here are a few things you should think about. Continue reading

A Philosophy Of Abundance

Forty or so years ago, George Harrison wrote a song called “I Me Mine.” It’s about achieving an ego-less state of mind and is especially interesting in the context of how The Beatles were imploding at the time due to egos.
I thought about that song as I was working on a bit of business development over the weekend. The reality is that I’m probably not the right consultant for the project and I know of a few other folks who might be better at it. That realization is something we try to teach our kids – how to share – and I think that it may come down to something from which we all can learn – a philosophy of abundance. Continue reading

Personal SEO

Ensure Website Visibility With Search Engine O...

You might have read or heard about Search Engine Optimization or SEO for short.  While it’s not the focus of my consulting practice, it is one of the areas in which I offer advice.  In a nutshell, it’s about getting found.  I mean, when one thinks about how much STUFF is out there on the interwebs, climbing to the top of the results pages people get when they search for various information is kind of important.  After all, when was the last time you made it to page 3  of the search results?

So that’s kind of the answer to why one might want to practice SEO.  But I think some basic SEO principles apply to you as an individual and not just to your digital life.  Let’s see if you’re with me. Continue reading
