What Ails Us

Over the weekend, S&P downgraded the credit rating of the United States, something that was unthinkable not such a short time ago.  This morning, markets worldwide are tumbling.  As you know, we don’t talk about politics here unless those political activities bring us enlightenment from a business perspective and I can’t think of a more perfect example than this.

To reduce this to its simplest form, the credit downgrade was caused (and I’m NOT placing blame on either side here) by our “leaders'” inability to govern.  The effects of this are mostly unfelt yet, but the ones we’re already feeling are pretty bad.   But let’s keep it to business, shall we? I’m glad the NFL lockout is over and not just as a fan.  I have a number of friends who work for the league and having lived through a missed season during my time with the NHL  I know that those folks were not having a leisurely Summer while things worked themselves out.  There have been more than enough diatribes about billionaires fighting millionaires so that’s not today’s discussion.  Instead, I want to talk about some news I read over the weekend that provides a great business lesson to us all.

The Colts redid Peyton Manning‘s contract.  That’s not huge news but the fact that he insisted on taking less money than the team offered him is.  It’s his thinking that’s the great point for the rest of us. Continue reading

Pulpo A La Plancha

To end the week, it’s pulpo. For those of you who don’t speak Spanish, that’s octopus. I have had pulpo on my mind since dinner last night and since it’s Foodie Friday I thought I’d share some of what I’ve been thinking about.
The Mrs. and I went to a tapas place last evening and there was a special of pulpo a la plancha. I’ll explain what it is in a second but I ended up ordering two plates of it and eating them both by myself. Gluttony? No, just a great business lesson. Continue reading
