Getting Out In Front Of A Problem

Over the weekend, you might have read about Zappos getting hacked. Specifically, some of their account information was illegally accessed. I read about it but didn’t think too much about it until this morning I got an email from them and it turns out that my account may have been one of the 24 million that was grabbed.

What I want to write about is how Zappos handled it and how it can be a great example for any business that has to deal with a problem not of its own making. As an aside, I think Zappos is a model for many things in business – customer service being quite high on the list. But let’s stick to the issue at hand. Continue reading

Is On Your Own Right For You?

Today marks four years to the day that I’ve been without a real job. Oh, I have lots of work (although more is always appreciated – you know where to reach me!) but I haven’t held down the sort of job I had for the previous 30 years prior to that day. To commemorate the occasion, I’ll be lunching with the same group of friends who accompanied me that cold December day to welcome me into their world of self-employment. They’re lawyers, consultants, financial advisors – top-shelf professionals who decided that the rewards outside of corporate life outweighed the risks.

The Other Guy

The weekend brought snow and took away electricity.  Unlike the power loss from Hurricane Irene, dealing with the cold is an issue here along with the inconvenience of working remotely.  Then again, no trees fell on the house or car although we saw several that did just that as we drove around yesterday to a relative’s house for shelter.  You feel for those people – it’s far easier for us to replace the food that will spoil than the roof or a car others will need to fix.  Which of course got me thinking about something we sometimes neglect in business.
