If you’ve been following along in this space you know that one of my favorite artists is The Boss.  I’ve seen him many time over the last (gulp) forty years (honest – the first time was 1972) in venues ranging from a few thousand seats to very large stadia.   I’ve seen him with the E-Street Band, as a solo artist with another band, and even all by himself doing a one-man show.  The music is always great but there was something else that hit me about all of those shows that reminded me of a business point this morning. Man At The Top

A little bit of The Boss to start us off this week.  Bruce recorded a song called Man At The Top for the Born in the USA album but it didn’t make the final cut.  He performed it rarely until he released it 15 years later for the Tracks album.  It’s a pretty simple song – kind of reminds me of Hungry Heart married to Ben E. King‘s Stand By Me.

In any event, I was in the car yesterday morning and it came on the radio.  As I was singing along, the thought crossed my mind that the folks who want to be the man at the top should be careful what they’re asking for.  Let me explain. Continue reading

Dixie Chicken

“Tell me a story” is a phrase you hear a lot as a parent. When the kids don’t want to go right to bed, they’ll use it to stall. When they are feeling anxious, they’ll use it to gain some calming certainty. Stories predate written history and telling them is an art form. We all know a few great jokes (many of which aren’t for this space in my case…).  Told well, those can be great stories.  When you set a great story to music, you have a great song. Continue reading
