All You Can Eat

For our Foodie Friday post I want to talk for a second about “all you can eat.”  I’m not going to spend any time on a debate about whether it’s a healthy approach or not although I think most of us can agree that there’s an obesity problem in the U.S.  Instead, I want to focus on the business approach to it and not just in the food industry.

You might say – oh, I don’t really do the “all you can eat” thing except you do.  Your internet access, for example.  But unlike unlimited “seconds” on the buffet line, AYCE (I got tired of typing the whole thing out) might not work in your business and, more importantly, can have exactly the opposite effect you intend. Going Out To Eat

I follow a lot of chefs on Twitter. I’m not sure why, exactly. Like many Twitter users, what they have to say is sometimes wonderful and enlightening; other times it’s just the stupid banter they exchange with their peers. There is the odd recipe link or photo to some food porn picture they’ve taken but one thing that seems to be a constant is they tweet about going out to eat. You might find it odd that people who run kitchens and make food for a living would choose to spend their down-time on the other side of the pass-through but I don’t. I woke up Friday morning with a cold. By Saturday it had taken root throughout my body and I had the classic chills (and a very low grade fever), no energy, a rattle in my chest and a head that felt as if it needed a sump pump. A very pleasant weekend indeed!
Since I stopped commuting on trains and riding in elevators every day I haven’t been sick at all. This isn’t a coincidence and I had been on a train, in an elevator, on the subway, and in a number of offices early last week. I’m sure sniffles abounded. As did a business point. Continue reading
