Another Season of Nightmares

Finally Friday, and given yesterday’s exacta ticket of St. Patrick’s Day and the beginning of the NCAA basketball tournament, I’m sure there are more than a few hangovers out there. I’ll try not to use many big words, OK?
Foodie Fridays now feature one of my favorite shows, Kitchen Nightmares. If you’ve never watched it, I think it’s worth checking out, especially since it’s really a business show. The premise is that Chef Gordon Ramsey steps in to save failing restaurants, and in most cases the sub-par food is only a fraction of the problem. Kind of like your office, right? Continue reading

Won’t Get Fooled Again?

There are so many things about which to write this morning and yet I find myself reverting to a few common themes expressed in this space over the last few years.  It just amazes me that Santayana‘s maxim about the past is given so much lip service and yet ignored in practice.

I’ll apologize upfront if I sound kind of angry but I kind of am.  You see, things such as earthquakes, which we can’t control, are very different from things such as knee-jerk reactions to malicious underhandedness, which we can.  In this and other cases it costs people their jobs and embarrasses their organizations for absolutely no reason.  I’ll also tell you upfront that this is NOT a political rant because in this case although the incident was politically motivated the business implications could not be more clear. Stress Tests

When you get past the speed limit age-wise (that would be 55 in many states), your doctor wants you to have all kinds of tests as “baselines” so when you start to complain about stuff she can see what’s changed. I was told to go get a stress test even though I tried to explain that I’d been getting them regularly for the last 30 years or more. Let’s see if you buy the explanation because she didn’t!
