A Philosophy Of Abundance

Forty or so years ago, George Harrison wrote a song called “I Me Mine.” It’s about achieving an ego-less state of mind and is especially interesting in the context of how The Beatles were imploding at the time due to egos.
I thought about that song as I was working on a bit of business development over the weekend. The reality is that I’m probably not the right consultant for the project and I know of a few other folks who might be better at it. That realization is something we try to teach our kids – how to share – and I think that it may come down to something from which we all can learn – a philosophy of abundance. Continue reading

9/11

Today, this isn’t about business. If you want to skip it and come back in a couple of days, I understand. See you Tuesday.

I’m publishing this on 9/11, 10 years after a horrible day changed the world forever. I’ve spent a good part of the day thinking about the subsequent decade and how it was so very different from the 4 others in which I’ve lived that preceded it and I want to use today to share some of those thoughts. I also know we don’t do politics here – I think today we will, although hopefully in a non-partisan way.  So here are a few things I remember most about 9/11/01. Continue reading

What Ails Us

Over the weekend, S&P downgraded the credit rating of the United States, something that was unthinkable not such a short time ago.  This morning, markets worldwide are tumbling.  As you know, we don’t talk about politics here unless those political activities bring us enlightenment from a business perspective and I can’t think of a more perfect example than this.

To reduce this to its simplest form, the credit downgrade was caused (and I’m NOT placing blame on either side here) by our “leaders'” inability to govern.  The effects of this are mostly unfelt yet, but the ones we’re already feeling are pretty bad.   But let’s keep it to business, shall we?
