If you’ve been following along in this space you know that one of my favorite artists is The Boss.  I’ve seen him many time over the last (gulp) forty years (honest – the first time was 1972) in venues ranging from a few thousand seats to very large stadia.   I’ve seen him with the E-Street Band, as a solo artist with another band, and even all by himself doing a one-man show.  The music is always great but there was something else that hit me about all of those shows that reminded me of a business point this morning. The Food Court

For today’s Foodie Friday Fun post I want to talk about what the food court tells us about media.  I know – exactly what you were thinking about yourself.  But there really is an analogy in there.

I’m sure you’ve wandered around the mall and as you get to the food court you’ve had folks come up to you with samples of food.  Maybe you had the same experience at the supermarket or Costco.  Sampling isn’t exactly a new strategy, even in media.  Movies have been giving away samples – the “coming attractions” – for as long as I can remember.  So what’s different and why is it important? One Size Fits All

It’s Friday and our food-related theme for the day involves tools.  Kitchen tools, specifically.  Let me ask you to think about how many assorted gadgets, pots, mini-appliances and other tools you have stashed in your kitchen?  If you’re like me, you have dozens.  There are many knives of different sizes – chefs knives, boning knives, paring knives, and others.  There are pans with different profiles which I use depending on whether I’m sautéing, braising, making a sauce, or frying.  Even the materials for similar pans can be different – I have cast-iron and stainless pans of the same size and profile yet use them very differently.
