The Leaf Campaign

Have you seen the new ad campaign from Nissan? You can find the videos on YouTube and a Facebook page is home base – check it out. What I like most about it is that it asks a very simple question and does it in a way that I think makes an excellent business point with which to start the week.

The campaign raises the question “What if everything ran on gasoline?”  The absurdity of the things depicted in the videos (I like the gas-powered alarm clock myself) gets you thinking about your assumptions.  This, as you  know if you’re a regular here, is one of my favorite themes.  Why do cars have to run on gasoline?  Why do we do the things we do in business (or our own lives for that matter) as we’ve always done them?

This is going to be a brief post to start the week but that single question – why do we do things as we always have – is probably the most important one each of us can ask on a regular basis.  Challenging assumptions has always been the catalyst to big advances  – man can’t fly, there’s no cure for polio, etc.  Hopefully that’s what we’re going to continue to do together in this space.

I was riding home on the train last night and there was a guy chowing down.  “Eating” would be a gross understatement – he was mechanically stuffing his face for nearly the entire hour of the train ride.  Since it’s Friday, he seemed right on topic for our weekly food theme.

If you walk around at lunch time you might spot a number of people behaving in a similar manner.  They’re focused on something other than their food.  Eating is something they do because at some point we all have to.  I get the sense that if they could take a pill and be done with the eating thing they would.  Then there are the folks that don’t really seem to be enjoying their food but just keep eating it.  When they’re done with one thing – or whatever is on their plate – they’ll move on to the next thing – or to your plate!  Kind of food sharks – they must keep eating even if they’re not hungry.

Which of course prompted a business thought. Continue reading

Cover Bands

Wide World of Sports (U.S. TV series)

I suspect any of us who ever tried to play rock music for a living were, at some point, in a cover band.  Heck, a couple of my favorite bands – The Grateful Dead and The E Street Band – are just as well-known for some kick-ass cover versions of other people’s songs as they are for some of their original work.  There is absolutely nothing wrong with doing a cover.  You probably didn’t know it was a business thought too!
