This Foodie Friday, I want to share something I discovered from my grandmother, who knew very little about cooking and even less about business. Nevertheless, I came upon something the other day which is instructive in both areas. We bought a GroupOn to have some videotapes transferred to DVD and are in the process of going through the old stuff to make sure that what we’re sending isn’t just hours of babies laying about (which a lot of it is, not surprisingly). Instant Replay
I was watching the Chicago Bears play the Detroit Lions last night. I’m not sure if you watched, but the first quarter of the game was a mess – lots of penalties and a couple of challenges to rulings on the field using instant replay. I flashed back to when the NFL put in the current replay system. Some of us at the networks were a little concerned that suddenly what we were doing could become part of the game instead of us just covering what was happening since they use TV coverage to look at the calls. The concern was about a missed camera angle or a technical problem changing the outcome.
That hasn’t been an issue for the most part, and the replay system has been a good thing in my mind. After all, events move very fast on the field and it’s not always easy to get it right all the time. Sound like your work day? It does to me, and it raises a thought. Continue reading

The New Year
Last night marked the start of the Jewish New Year. I didn’t go down to Times Square to see if they were dropping a giant knish at the stroke of sundown – probably not. L’Shana Tova – a happy and healthy New Year to all of you.
One of the things Jews do over the next 10 days (or at least are supposed to do) is to reflect on the year gone by and think about where it took you on life’s journey. It’s not really as much about looking back in my mind as it is about looking forward. Oh sure, one is supposed to think about where one strayed from life’s path in terms of dealing with other humans and human codes of conduct. We get a day of fasting next week to get that sorted out. But it’s also a time to think about a fresh start. Which, of course, promoted a business thought. Continue reading
