Where Did You Learn This Stuff?

From time to time I chat with folks who are just starting their professional lives. One of the things many of them discover pretty early on in their job searches is that they have spent a lot of money obtaining a degree that might not qualify them to do much. This isn’t something new: my degrees are in English and Education which have, on the surface, very little to do with a career in traditional and digital media, sales, and sports.

The question I get asked a lot is “how did you get to where you are?” – what was my career path, etc. Inevitably, the specific knowledge one needs to advance down a particular road comes up and then the question becomes “where did you learn this stuff?”. Good question, and not as simple an answer as you’d think. Continue reading

Dark Star

I went to see the Dark Star Orchestra not long ago,  For those of you unfamiliar with DSO, they deliver what can best be described as the Grateful Dead experience, often better than The Dead themselves did.

They play Dead shows – we saw one from May, 1972 – as the band did.  They look like them, they sound like them (and in fact are way more consistently good on a night after night basis) and if you shut your eyes, you can be at a Dead show from whatever decade they’ve chosen to present.

The next most-read post of the year was inspired by a win on the PGA Tour.  It had to do with doing your best while not losing sight of having fun at the same time.  Not that any of us ever get so caught up in the heat of battle that we break golf clubs or telephones…

If you’ve ever held a golf club, you’ve watched the movie Caddyshack.  More than once.  In fact, if you play golf you probably have had something from the  movie quoted to you at least once during every round.  I know a lot of you who don’t play the game know the movie as well.  Hopefully all of you were watching yesterday as Carl Spackler Bill Murray won the Pro-Am part of the PGA Tour event at Pebble Beach.  This is not the typical one-day thing – it’s four rounds at three of the toughest (and most beautiful) golf courses in the country.  Strangely, there was a business lesson involved.  Did you catch it?
