When I worked around lawyers in some of my past business lives, there would always be days when they were totally unavailable. The reason was something called “CLE”. As I came to found out, the full term is MCLE – Minimum Continuing Legal Education and while the requirements vary by state bar association, in general lawyers need to take courses in everything from ethics (ahem) to professional responsiblity to changes in law in areas of specialty.

Let’s start the year off with a question I’m sure you’ve heard if you have kids. It goes something like this: Why learn? “Why do I have to learn all this stuff in (math, history, chemistry – pick one) when I’ll never use it anyway?” The easy way out is to remind them that you had to labor through it and it’s the unfortunate lot of children that their play gets interrupted to acquire certain life skills. However, in an age when damn near everything anyone has ever learned is pretty much accessible via a search of some sort, and access to search is immediately available everywhere, why learn indeed? I’ve taught a couple of children how to ride a bicycle. Maybe you have as well or maybe you can remember learning to ride yourself. It’s a pretty complex thing – balance, speed, and a bunch of other things have to be dealt with if we’re going to avoid the trip to the medicine cabinet. It’s really about courage at first – can I DO this – and then about trust after you make that first long run yourself (OK, it’s sort of about stopping during that first run!). Continue reading →
