Another Season of Nightmares

Finally Friday, and given yesterday’s exacta ticket of St. Patrick’s Day and the beginning of the NCAA basketball tournament, I’m sure there are more than a few hangovers out there. I’ll try not to use many big words, OK?
Foodie Fridays now feature one of my favorite shows, Kitchen Nightmares. If you’ve never watched it, I think it’s worth checking out, especially since it’s really a business show. The premise is that Chef Gordon Ramsey steps in to save failing restaurants, and in most cases the sub-par food is only a fraction of the problem. Kind of like your office, right? Continue reading

Idiot Proof

I was on a call this morning with the tech and ad teams from a client of mine.  We’re spending a bunch of time trying to reconfigure the ad system to be more target-able (is that a word?) and flexible for sponsors.  As we discussed a number of options for changing the existing content management system the discussion kept coming back to the change in work flow that the changes would mean for the editors and producers.  The tech guys, who are very good at what they do, were trying to figure out logic which would prevent a CMS user from categorizing a piece of content incorrectly which could mess up the ad targeting.  Given that these changes are kind of pressing and also given that the logic they were building would take a lot of time to implement, I felt a need to comment on that incongruity with some excellent advice I was given and which I’d like to pass along. The Kitchen

Kitchen at Yuba/Sutter Camp and Juvenile Hall,...

The end of another week and another food-related screed on Foodie Fun Friday.  We were out to dinner last evening at a Venezuelan beach food place I’ve written about before.  We happened to be seated in a place (it’s tiny) where I had an unobstructed view of the kitchen.  The space was minute and 4 cooks and a dishwasher were all scurrying around.  The occasional visit by a server would add to the clutter.  And it was hot – the air conditioning didn’t make it back to the kitchen – you could tell when you went to the register (near the kitchen) to pay.  The conditions weren’t great although the food was.  And that, of course, got me thinking about business.
