Finally Friday, and with it comes our weekly food-related theme.  This one won’t be as pleasant as some but hopefully it gets you thinking (and eating) a little better about seafood specifically and all food in general.

Oceana is an organization founded to protect the oceans.  They issued a report on seafood fraud recently which I found to be eye-opening although, unfortunately, unsurprising.  I want to highlight one point and see if you agree with me that it leads to a bigger business point. Continue reading

The Budget

I think we all know by now that politics is not a topic of conversation in this space.  However, sometimes things going on  in politics lead us to insights about business and hopefully that’s the case today.

You’re probably aware that there’s a “discussion” of sorts going on with respect to the Federal Budget (I use quotes because it often seems to be less of a discussion than a topic about which to issue press releases stressing one’s unwavering position as if that’s helping us all).    I’m kind of amused that all we seem to hear about is how we need to cut spending (we do) and not a lot about how to grow revenues.  Which of course got me thinking about it in business terms. The Food Court

For today’s Foodie Friday Fun post I want to talk about what the food court tells us about media.  I know – exactly what you were thinking about yourself.  But there really is an analogy in there.

I’m sure you’ve wandered around the mall and as you get to the food court you’ve had folks come up to you with samples of food.  Maybe you had the same experience at the supermarket or Costco.  Sampling isn’t exactly a new strategy, even in media.  Movies have been giving away samples – the “coming attractions” – for as long as I can remember.  So what’s different and why is it important?
