The Columbia Journalism Review published a report yesterday which was summarized in the NY Times.  It caught my eye for some reasons I’ll explain and I think if you have any interest in digital media you’ll find it a good read.  You can download the entire report (all 146 pages!) at this link but the story in the Times is far briefer and gives you the gist of the findings.  In a few words, newspapers need to embrace digital media and that journalists “gain a fuller appreciation for how advertisers now reach their customers via social media, new-media ads and search engine optimization,” and that larger news organizations should consider creating or re-creating separate digital staffs, “particularly on the business side.”  Right on! What Boxing Tells Us About Broadband

Growing up, I used to follow boxing.  It was pretty easy to be a fan – there weren’t a lot of weight classes, there was a single sanctioning body that mattered so there was only one champion in each weight class, and it was on free TV (although pay TV didn’t exist yet) every week. In short, it was simple and fan friendly.  A high-quality product was made available each week and promoters and TV networks did everything they could to get me to watch.

Your Next Gig

So here’s a question for you.  Does your next job exist?  I don’t mean is there an opening someplace.  I mean it literally – do you think the role itself exists?  It’s not as simple a question as one might think.  After all – the job I’m in now – consultant – has existed for a long time but one area of expertise in which I consult – digital media – has only been around for 15 years or so.  So let’s think about this for a second and what it means.
