Passion For The Product

To finish off the week on our usual food theme, I’ll report on something I heard this week on one of the many podcasts to which I subscribe.  While WTF is generally about comedy, recently the host interviewed Anthony Bourdain, noted author, TV personality and, as he would tell you, former glorified line cook.  Mark Maron, the host, was discussing the similarities between comics and cooks and the discussion covered training and paying one’s dues.  Mr. Bourdain then made a comment that stuck with me and I think covers broader businesses than funny and food. The Easy Way Out

I read something this week that fits our Foodie Friday theme and ends the week with a stimulating thought. There is an ongoing flame war between Mark Bittman, a well-known food author, and Josh Ozersky, who is an award-winning food writer as well. The battlefield is Time Magazine and the subject is “industrial food.” If you’re interested in the blow-by-blow, you can read the articles here, but their conversation about our food system makes a broader business point in my mind. Nanny’s Matzoh Balls

This Foodie Friday, I want to share something I discovered from my grandmother, who knew very little about cooking and even less about business.  Nevertheless, I came upon something the other day which is instructive in both areas.  We bought a GroupOn to have some videotapes transferred to DVD and are in the process of going through the old stuff to make sure that what we’re sending isn’t just hours of babies laying about (which a lot of it is, not surprisingly).  At one point during some family gathering, my grandmother is asked about making matzoh balls and how she did it.  The answer?
