Gettin’ Nichy Wit It

If you’re a Boomer like me, you grew up in a 12 channel universe.  There were a few commercial TV networks, maybe PBS as well.  Throw in the independent and some UHF stations (remember those?) and those were your viewing options.  If you are GenX, you grew up the same way although there were a few new activities such as Pong and Sega to keep you busy.

Things start to get interesting with my kids’ group – GenY, Echo Boomers, whatever you call them.  By 1992, there were “57 channels and nothing on”, 10 or more times what I had available growing up.  Today, I have 10 times those 57 channels available and that’s just on TV.  There are an infinite number on my computer, and I can view them on the same screen that once made only a handful available to me.  The point? Butchering The Chance

What better food topic than the premiere of Top Chef for our Foodie Friday Fun?  The power came back on in time for the show the other night (yay!) and in addition to some intriguing food there was a great business point made right off the bat.  The competition began with far more than the usual 16 cooks and many of those who came to Texas thinking they were on the show were, in fact, fighting for one of those 16 slots.  One competitor in particular stood out for all the wrong reasons, and it’s he who provided the business point I’d like to make today.

A Hockey Player Here To Play Golf

If you’ve seen Happy Gilmore you understand the notion of someone who is skilled at one thing transferring those skills to something else.  In the film’s case, Happy’s ability to smash a slap shot was a perfect antecedent to his long drive skills in golf.  As an aside, it’s not all fictitious:  I”ve played golf with many hockey players from the NHL level on down and almost without exception they play golf quite well.
