Dancing In The Dark

If you spend any time reading about what’s going on in digital media, you’re probably aware of Rupert Murdoch‘s war on free content.  His beef is that many companies spend lots of resources to produce original content and then others such as Google, Drudge, and HuffPo aggregate it and make money off of it with minimal investment.  He wants to place a lot of content behind pay walls which, in my opinion, will be an interesting experiment but one which is doomed to failure unless there is a systematic change in the nature of the web.  But that’s not the subject of today’s piece.  Instead, Rupert’s now gone one step beyond. Doom and Gloom

A slide rule.  This is an example of a mathema...

You can sort-of fake remember the headline – “Sales of Slide Rules Forecast to Drop Dramatically.” (I think I just made up that “fake remember” notion, by the way).  A gloomy forecast that hides good news – “Sales of Calculators Skyrocket” because they’re a better solution (and I’m old enough to have used a slide rule in school – not fun). If you’ve spent any time around ad agencies and/or media sales people, inevitably the subject of process automation comes up. Many agencies are living in fear of Google on a lot of levels, in part because the big guys don’t do search and search’s high accountability calls a lot of other media decisions into question.   One other factor is the automation of the whole buying and selling process and that’s today’s topic.
