Learning to Ride

I’ve taught a couple of children how to ride a bicycle.  Maybe you have as well or maybe you can remember learning to ride yourself.  It’s a pretty complex thing – balance, speed, and a bunch of other things have to be dealt with if we’re going to avoid the trip to the medicine cabinet.  It’s really about courage at first – can I DO this – and then about trust after you make that first long run yourself (OK, it’s sort of about stopping during that first run!). The Oldest Profession

You’re thinking I’m talking about the ladies of the night? Well, in a way I am, as you’ll see.  Today’s post is about the Craigslist controversy.  As you may have read, a number of states attorneys general have decided to get some publicity by singling out the online classified site for its “erotic services” section. From what I gather, a number of escorts, “masseuses” and plain old hookers use the site to troll for clients. Easier than standing on a corner, I guess, although the principle is the same.  Continue reading

We Win

It’s always interested me when people talk about “win-win” deals. The reality is that most of the people I know mean “I get what I want and you don’t have to give up much more than you want to” when they use that term.  It strikes me that taken to an extreme, the notion of “I win, you win” got us to The Civil War, as the North ended slavery (win) and the South decided to go someplace where they could preserve it (win). Of course, the collective “we” lost. Continue reading
