Back At It

I finally played golf this weekend. If you’ve been following my tweets or taken note of the snide side comments in this space, you know I’ve not been happy about the layoff.  In fact, the 90+ days of enforced time off (a layer of snow really does inhibit one’s ability to find a white golf ball as well as reduce how far that ball travels) did have a side benefit, one which I think might apply in some ways to business as well. A Quick Reality Check

A rainy Friday for our Foodie post.  But at least it’s not snow so I’m feeling like we’re heading towards warmer weather, golf, and outdoor cooking.  I had a conversation with someone yesterday about what type of smoker I use and why I won’t grill on a gas grill outdoors in the winter and after the chat was over I realized that the main reason has something to do with authenticity.  To me, grilling is about wood – it’s descended from the earliest forms of cooking, even pre-pots and pans and to miss out on the flavor imparted by using this most ancient cooking form is corrupting your meal.  Of course, most people don’t know any better and that’s not just about grilling. My Frozen Shoulder

I went to the orthopedist today because I’ve been having pain in my shoulder. Well actually the pain started a few months ago but I wrote it off to age and overuse towards the end of the last golf season. I figured it would get better with rest. Not so much. In fact, there are times when I reach for something on a shelf and a little man with an ice pick plays Toccata and Fugue on my shoulder. It’s not healing. I guess the reluctance to hit the MD is related to not wanting to ask for directions when lost – an inherent stubbornness and a desire not to seem weak. Continue reading
