The Reserve Tank

I’m writing this post from my back-up computer.  Actually, it’s the back-up to my back-up and I’ve fired it up because I’m using my real back-up to do my work since my main desktop died.  Turns out there are really excellent reasons to turn your computer off at night besides the environmental concerns and those reasons involve fried capacitors (mmm…fried!).  But that’s not our subject this morning nor is a rant about the evil machines that run our lives. Ripped Off

I got a note from a former colleague of mine the other day.  They were kind of ticked off because they felt as if someone had ripped off an idea of theirs and the thief got the proverbial pat on the head from the powers that be.  I guess I’m not painting myself in a very flattering light here because I know they wanted a lot more sympathy from me than I gave them. I mean, I wasn’t a total d&*k about it – I did let them know I knew how they felt – but having had my fair share of ideas ripped off over the years I learned a few things which I’d like to share with you as I did with them. Believing In Your Product

One of the first things you learn in sales is to believe in your own product.  Some folks call it eating your own dog food but the basic idea is two-fold.  First, if you’re going to foist something on a customer you should be willing to be that customer yourself.  Second, it’s a great way to do usability testing and in sales, it helps you discover selling points that may not even have been designed into the product plan.

I’m a big fan of the process and was really impressed when I read about what I consider to be the ultimate instance of belief in a product:  one that literally puts your life on the line. Continue reading
