If you spend any time reading about what’s going on in digital media, you’re probably aware of Rupert Murdoch‘s war on free content. His beef is that many companies spend lots of resources to produce original content and then others such as Google, Drudge, and HuffPo aggregate it and make money off of it with minimal investment. He wants to place a lot of content behind pay walls which, in my opinion, will be an interesting experiment but one which is doomed to failure unless there is a systematic change in the nature of the web. Hiding in Plain Sight
My nieces changed their profile names on Facebook. As I understand it, this isn’t some new form of teenage rebellion – dissociating themselves from their parents by changing their names – but a tactic that many kids are employing to make it harder for them to be found by admissions officers, potential employers, and others whom they might not want looking at their profiles. Given that we live in an age of “open, discoverable, and transparent,” this is kind of counter-intuitive. Or maybe not. Continue reading

Don’t Touch!
Ever deal with a hot stove or wet paint? Most of the time, the latter has a sign posted around it that says exactly what it is. Generally, most people avoid it but there’s always some genius who has to check it out by sticking a finger in to see how wet it really might be.
If you’re a parent, the hot stove lesson is teaching your kids to pay attention to feedback from others about things going on around them. I tell you it’s hot and if you ignore me you’re going to be sorry. Which is why I find something really perplexing. Continue reading
