I’m glad the NFL lockout is over and not just as a fan.  I have a number of friends who work for the league and having lived through a missed season during my time with the NHL  I know that those folks were not having a leisurely Summer while things worked themselves out.  There have been more than enough diatribes about billionaires fighting millionaires so that’s not today’s discussion.  Instead, I want to talk about some news I read over the weekend that provides a great business lesson to us all.

The Colts redid Peyton Manning‘s contract.  That’s not huge news but the fact that he insisted on taking less money than the team offered him is.  It’s his thinking that’s the great point for the rest of us. Continue reading

Forgive And Remember

We all make mistakes.  Some of them are relatively minor and are great learning experiences.  Others are heinous and offensive and reflect bad judgement as well as bad character.  No, I’m not writing with a guilty conscience this morning.  I am writing, however, after having seen a couple of announcements in the last few days which got me thinking about forgiveness.

“Forgive and forget” is a grand idea.  Every major religion talks to the topic and giving forgiveness is, in fact, mandatory in Judaism once someone apologizes and makes amends.  I expect it’s thought of in a similar manner in other faiths.   And while “forgiveness” is an admirable quality, I’m not sure “forgetting” is in that context.  But let’s see what you think. Business Language

Like some of you, I watch a lot of sports on TV.  I listen to sports when I’m in the car.  I’m kind of obsessed, I know.   Because of this, I hear a lot of different announcers – good ones, bad ones, smart ones, dumb ones.  But it’s only over the last couple of weeks – yep, World Cup again – that I’ve come to appreciate how the careful, clever use of language can enhance the event experience much as food is enhanced by the cook who knows how to season it properly.  And that’s something to keep in mind for business as well!
