Instant Replay

A reel of 2" Quadruplex (aka 2" Quad...

I was watching the Chicago Bears play the Detroit Lions last night.  I’m not sure if you watched, but the first quarter of the game was a mess – lots of penalties and a couple of challenges to rulings on the field using instant replay.  I flashed back to when the NFL put in the current replay system.  Some of us at the networks were a little concerned that suddenly what we were doing could become part of the game instead of us just covering what was happening since they use TV coverage to look at the calls.  The concern was about a missed camera angle or a technical problem changing the outcome.

That hasn’t been an issue for the most part, and the replay system has been a good thing in my mind.  After all, events move very fast on the field and it’s not always easy to get it right all the time.  Sound like your work day?  It does to me, and it raises a thought. Continue reading

One thing caught my eye last week and you might have missed it since there was so much else going on.  The Yankees and Orioles played a baseball game last Tuesday.  That’s not really news.  However, they started play at 11:08pm ET after a four-hour rain delay, and the game did not end until 2:15am. Yep, you read that right.  Guess the kids were late to school after the game?

Apparently, the Commissioner’s Office called the Yankees and told them to get the game played.  The Yankees, in an effort to make sure the folks who had tickets to the game (it was played so no rain-checks, right?) announced that ticket-holders to the game would be given some form of a free ticket offer to “any Yankees game – next season”.  Having worked in a sports league, I know that the postponement and rescheduling of games is a nightmare, especially given travel, labor rules, and fan reaction.  But since it rained throughout the game, maybe the risk of injury should have prevailed in their thinking?  And not just to the players. Taking Your Medicine

JOHNS CREEK, GA - AUGUST 13: Rory McIlroy (R)...

You just knew there would be some sort of post about golf this morning.  After all, PGA Championship, the season’s final major finished up yesterday and of course I watched almost every minute.  I took a few things away  from watching over the last four days.  It would be fun to write about Tiger‘s troubles (I always wanted to play like him and after watching him hitting into the trees, the sand, and the water, I think I can!) but I think I’ll save that post.  Instead, I want to write about a decision another golfer made that illustrates a great business point.
