Devastating news over the weekend about the passing of Clarence Clemons from complications arising from the stroke he had a week ago. I suppose it shouldn’t have been such a shock since the early reports on his condition weren’t that great, but it was. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve seen Scooter and The Big Man over the last almost 40 years and knowing I won’t see the two of them together again makes me sad.
As I’ve had time to think about this over the last 36 hours, two things did cross my mind that I think are right for this space and I hope you do as well. Continue reading

Cover Bands

I suspect any of us who ever tried to play rock music for a living were, at some point, in a cover band.  Heck, a couple of my favorite bands – The Grateful Dead and The E Street Band – are just as well-known for some kick-ass cover versions of other people’s songs as they are for some of their original work.  There is absolutely nothing wrong with doing a cover.  You probably didn’t know it was a business thought too! 7/4 Time

How about a little music this morning to provide the soundtrack to our daily business discussion?  I think most of you are familiar with the basic rock beat of thousands of songs.  You might be tapping your feet to that 4/4 beat as you read this.  Or maybe you prefer 3/4 time – a typical waltz.  If we add in 2/4 time – kind of a baby brother to 4/4 – and 6/8 time – maybe a big brother to a waltz – we’ve about covered most of the music on your iPod.

Then there are those who think differently and use 7/4 time.  You’ve heard it – “Money” by Pink Floyd and “Estimated Prophet” by The Grateful Dead are the two best known examples.  This is a time signature that feels familiar and yet it’s just a bit off.  Sound like something you can use?
