Phoning It In

There’s a certain tendency in today’s hyper-segmented media environment to want to scream louder than the next get to get noticed.  To a certain extent I suppose it’s part of the game along with the apparent contest of who can say the most outrageous things.  I guess the more “out there” or offensive the statement the higher the chance of it going viral.  I don’t necessarily fault those who do it – you guys can make a list pretty easily – except when they make things up and label them as fact.  Not great in media and really bad in business. The Ambulance

Suppose you’re exercising and start to feel shaky.  You get kind of clammy and you’re sweating profusely.  Sure, you haven’t eaten yet and maybe you should have been drinking more water as you went, but right now you know you’re in trouble.

So you call an ambulance just to be on the safe side, especially since you feel as if you might pass out.  There are probably 100 thoughts going through your mind but one of them isn’t “will the ambulance show up” or even “will someone answer 911”, right? Continue reading

The Forest And The Trees

We went to the movies over the weekend and saw “Unknown.”  It’s an interesting film in many ways although it won’t be up for Best Picture next year.  Like me, it’s entertaining for the most part!

I bring this up because there’s a great visual at one point.  Imagine yourself in a forest (birch trees in the movie) and you’re walking.  The trees are somewhat impenetrable – a solid wall with very few gaps in between.  As you move forward, suddenly the trees line up – they’re in perfect rows.  You realize that you’re actually in a forest which has been planted by man and what seemed so impenetrable a moment before was, in fact, very accommodating as long as you found the point where everything lines up.  Isn’t that an executive’s job?
