Back To The Garden

Remember the song “Woodstock“? Joni Mitchell wrote it, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young made it famous. One lyric is

The Tools

I got into one of those conversations a couple of weeks ago.  You know the ones:  something is so obvious to you and yet you don’t seem to make your point clearly.  No, the conversation wasn’t about politics although it does seem as if most political conversations would fit my description.  This one was about buying search ads but it just as easily could have been about Facebook, Twitter, or any number of other easily accessible digital tools.

At one point, the other party mentioned that they could do what I and a couple of others who are assisting them are doing on their behalf far less expensively either by doing it themselves or by hiring a “kid” part-time.  Putting aide that in essence a consultant is part-time help, I remembered the old joke about Henry Ford and Tesla identifying a problem area in 5 seconds – it’s $1 for making the mark and $9,999 for knowing where to make it.  A good thing to keep in mind and let me explain. Posts of the Year – 3

This post was written after the one of the many recent updates done by Facebook.  It was called “Failbook” and I was not happy about what they’d done. I’m not any happier now with the timeline, the news stream on the right, etc.  Are you?  Anyway, read on for a rant and a business lesson.

Unless you’re in a cave someplace or have abandoned it for Google+, you’ve probably noticed that Facebook did an overhaul last night.  I logged in this morning and while I’ll admit I’m not the brightest guy in the world, I was thoroughly confused.  Many of the new features are clearly designed to compete with things found on Google+ and Twitter, such as circles.  For those of you struggling to make sense of the new layout, Gizmodo did a nice job color-coding everything in a cheat sheet.

I’m a believer in continuous improvement.  I’m not a believer in keeping up with the Joneses.  Here’s why. Continue reading
