Here’s Why Facebook Mail Might Fail

I’m sure you’ve all read about Facebook adding email to their social platform.  If you didn’t know that you can read Gizmodo’s report here and there are lots of others out there.  It’s being mentioned as a Gmail killer and as a threat to Yahoo mail (the world’s biggest provider).  It incorporates email, SMS, Facebook messaging and chat.  Given that Facebook has half a BILLION people using its platform, it’s not hard to think that way.

In my mind, the three words in the title of today’s post are sort of the consumer equivalent of three other words: “We Love You.”  Let me explain and let’s see if you get to the same place.

There’s no business with which one does business that’s more intimate or important than your doctor.  I’m sure we’d all like to think of those practices as something other than a business but let’s be real; and as such, they need to consider the same things all of our businesses do with respect to customer service.  I hasten to add, by the way, that in their case, lousy customer service can result in consequences far worse than the water company misplacing your account info.

Failing Correctly

Today’s post is about a great example of how you can fail and leave users feeling good about you.  I signed up for a new web service after I read about it on a tech blog. I won’t tell you the name but in short it’s something that syncs all of your contact information together in one place. When you have as many “places” as I do, and the accompanying contacts, this is a great thing to have. If it worked. And it didn’t. But here’s why I’m OK about that. Continue reading
