You vs. You

One of the big mistakes I have seen over and over during my business career has been executives negotiating against themselves.  I’m not talking about simple role-playing to sort out how best to attack a problem.  What I mean is a group of businesspeople sitting together to plan strategy or review a contract and talking themselves out of a deal point because they believe that the other side won’t go for it even though they’ve heard nothing from the other side.   Dummies!  Here’s what I think is a better approach. Did you run into any friends this weekend?  You might have and I’m willing to wager that the conversation wasn’t solely about their lives and how great they are.  It’s like the joke where someone is chattering about themselves for 10 minutes and then says “but enough about ME! How do YOU like my watch?”  No one would really do that, right?

Maybe this is an idea for yet another reality show, but it’s a thought I have to end the week on a foodie theme.  I know – we need more competitive cooking shows about as much as we need more political ads on TV but I had this thought which of course also relates to business.
