Benjamin And Your Business

You’re probably familiar with Benjamin Franklin.

I wonder sometimes if all of the folks who say “it’s all about the benjamins” know why old Ben is on the hundred-dollar bill. They’d do well to pay attention to one of the things he had to say that ought to be a guiding principle of our business lives.

Believe only half of what you see and nothing that you hear.

In know it’s not Tuesday (TunesDay here on the screed) but The Boss paraphrased this in his song, “Magic.” The lyric is “Trust none of what you hear / And less of what you’ll see”. He explained it this way:

The song ‘Magic’ is about living in a time when anything that is true can be made to seem like a lie, and anything that is a lie can be made to seem true. There are people who have taken that as their credo.

Bruce went on to make a political statement which we’ll ignore for the moment in favor of how that thinking can help us in business.  Way too many managers rely on what they hear rather than what they see.  They’re often behind closed doors, reading reports that others have spent many hours compiling.  That’s kind of hearsay evidence in my mind.   It’s someones interpretation of what the numbers say which may or may bot be accurate.  As Bruce implies, people have their own agendas and they can twist numbers or facts to tell you their story, not THE story.  However, our jobs as managers are way too demanding on our time for us to do everything, of course, so how do we manage that dilemma?

We do a couple of things.  The first is that in the case of critical decisions we must gather information ourselves, and then trust only half of what we see as Ben advises.  The second is that we must train others to be our eyes, not our ears.  Then we need to remind them that they must “see” so you can.  That means teaching them to dig for information which presents itself first-hand.

Get out from behind your desks.  Wander around.  Don’t rely on a quarterly report that’s passed through several sets of hands of people who may or may not be relaying the information in an unfiltered manner.  If your reports tell you that you’re selling a lot and yet when you look in the warehouse it’s overflowing, ask questions.  Trust what you see, half of it anyway.  You’ll be seeing a lot more of Mr. Franklin that way – he’s the guy on the hundred.  Won’t that be fun?

11 Minutes Of Revolution

This week’s TunesDay special comes from the most influential band of the last century and maybe of all time – The Beatles.

Unless you’ve had your head in the sand for the last 50 years you’ve heard their music and specifically today’s song – “Revolution. However, you’ve probably never heard this version. It’s take 20 and extends the version that runs around 4 minutes into nearly 11.  This version surfaced in 2009 and is fascinating.  Have a listen:

This cut has been dubbed “Take Your Knickers Off” from Lennon‘s comment to the engineer at the start of the track.  Eventually it was split in two and became “Revolution” numbers 1 and 9 although in this form it’s really neither.  It’s sort of self-indulgent although the last several minutes contain moments of brilliance.  Even Yoko sounds interesting!  After much back and forth about the song, the band decided to re-cut it – faster, louder, and with what are now its signature distorted guitars for the single.  Which is the business point today.

Everyone needs an editor.  Great artists can self-edit up to a point and in the case of The Beatles that editing by committee served them well.  Most of us in business aren’t quite so smart.  We generally try to accomplish things on our own – creating products, ads, reports, or whatever.  That’s a mistake.  No matter how good we think our first drafts are, they need editing.

The best form comes when we give our draft to someone who is most like the intended audience and get a response.  It’s also important to build time into a project timetable to be able to step away from the work for a period and approach it having rested and lost the emotional attachment we all get to birthing a new work.  It’s much easier to cut away material that isn’t right or that might not be your best.

Every great author – even Shakespeare – had an editor.  If their work, as well as Lennon and McCartney‘s, can stand some editing, odds are ours can too.  Heck, you can get an example of that every day right here in this space!  Got it?

St. Patrick And Your Business

Happy Saint Patrick’s Day! This is one of the two days of the year (the other being New Year’s Eve) I like to call “amateur night.” People who rarely drink to excess seem to do so and the streets and trains are filled with people who were over served. All this in honor of the patron saint of Ireland.   As you can see from the statue, nearly every representation of him makes reference to his banishing the snakes from a country where they apparently never lived.

Patrick had the right idea even if the facts are a bit murky and that’s our business point today.  While different religions view snakes in different ways, a snake does get the blame in the Old Testament for tempting Eve in the Garden of Eden, thereby earning a reputation as a symbol of evil and plotting.  We see those kind of snakes all the time in business.  You know the ones I mean.

They might be the kind who pat you on the back and smile while they’re looking for a soft spot into which they’ll stick the knife.  Maybe they’re the ones who spread fear, uncertainty and doubt to create non-existent problems while presenting themselves as the only ones who can solve those problems.  Or maybe they’re just the people who come to work each day and are incapable of making decisions while keeping their conscience fully turned on.  They’re snakes and they need to go!

There are also systematic snakes.  The gremlins that inhabit all machines so they fail at exactly the wrong time and for which we have no back-up plan.  The process that ties up way too many people to produce way too little return on that time investment.  You probably know of quite a few of these in your business.  Why not take up St. Pat’s staff and drive all the snakes away?  Today is as good a day as any, before you have a sip of the green beer, isn’t it?
