Think back to your days in school (or for those of you still there, recall last month!) You know what was worse than handing in a crappy paper? Not handing in anything at all. We’ve all been there – we have great ideas, we spend a fair bit of time doing research and we come with lots of new, interesting choices about where to take our discussion.  In fact, sometimes we have so many good choices that we get hung up trying to pick the perfect one and end up missing our deadline or handing in a rush job.  Good bye brilliance; hello remedial English.

Business is the same way and I’ve found the digital business in particular to suffer from Voltaire’s favorite enemy:  perfection. Continue reading

Faulty Assumptions

I was wandering the Hallmark aisle this morning in search of an appropriate canned sentiment to give to the Mrs. in honor of her birthday. Unlike many holidays which seem to have been created specifically for Hallmark and various retail segments, I celebrate birthdays, especially those other than my own.
As I was sorting out the card options, I heard a phone ring. Actually, it didn’t “ring” in the traditional sense; it played. MC Hammer, to be specific. His 1990 hit “Can’t Touch This.”  And that’s when the business point hit me. Continue reading

Where Ya Been?

Those of you who subscribe to this blog feed may have noticed a rare period of quiet over the last couple of days.  Yes, I took a little bit of battery recharge time and didn’t post.  As it turned out, the lack of connectivity (I don’t travel with a wireless hot spot) and focus on things other than business (I try to practice what I preach) for a bit caused the gap.  But I’m back now.  Miss me?

I was away with the golf group about which I’ve written before.  As they do each year, everyone’s thoughts turned to the following year’s trip.  I thought we might try something different next year and rent a house rather than a series of condos.  So I was happy to see an email this morning from one of the agencies I’ve used before to rent a place.  Let’s plan next year with this year’s concerns fresh in our minds! What happened next – not so much. Continue reading
