Reality Isn’t Just TV

You might watch one reality competition or another. There are lots of them and I’m sure there’s one to appeal to some interest of yours – singing (Idol), dancing (Stars), Golf (Big Break), Cooking (Top Chef, etc.), business (The Apprentice) – they’re all out there.
No laughing, but I was an Idol fan. I say “was” because I’m done with it now after last week. A contestant who clearly should have been in the top 5, if not won it all, was eliminated. Lots of folks blamed lazy voters. I don’t – and there’s a business point in there too. Continue reading

Going Out To Eat

I follow a lot of chefs on Twitter. I’m not sure why, exactly. Like many Twitter users, what they have to say is sometimes wonderful and enlightening; other times it’s just the stupid banter they exchange with their peers. There is the odd recipe link or photo to some food porn picture they’ve taken but one thing that seems to be a constant is they tweet about going out to eat. You might find it odd that people who run kitchens and make food for a living would choose to spend their down-time on the other side of the pass-through but I don’t. I think I’ve mentioned my love of Mark Twain once or twice in this space previously. One of the topics upon which Twain commented was the weather. His most famous quote (which may not actually have been written by him) was that “Everybody talks about the weather but nobody does anything about it.” Well, I’m not sure we can do much about the weather (we’ll save the climate change discussion for another day) but we can use it for a quick thought about business.
