I’m heading out for meetings today but I wanted to remind you of an anniversary occurring today. On this day in 1912 Titanic sank after hitting an iceberg the evening before. 1,517 people died and more than 700 people survived. Titanic was supposed to be “unsinkable” despite her size. Every bit of early 20th century technology was in her, she was fast, safe and huge. I’m going to assume that you know the story even if it’s from watching the movie. Continue reading

Last week was actually Dr. King‘s birthday but since we’re celebrating it today I thought I’d add my two cents. I’m old enough to remember him and while he didn’t light the fire of the civil rights movement in the US (I’d say Rosa Parks is that hero), he certainly brought the fire to life and tended it well until his assassination (and I remember that as well – how horrible a day it was!). My friend and I were standing in the yard the other day when he said something to me that resonated. “I think we’ve both seen the country and the world go through some bad times before,” he said, “but it’s never felt like this.” That, of course, got me wondering how our grandparents felt (great grandparents for you younger types) on the eve of the Great Depression.
