A friend of mine sent some of us in our golf group a photo of some clubs he is thinking of buying. The clubs were displayed with a sale price and his caption was “better golf through MasterCard?” It’s a common thought among golfers – I’ll just buy a better game. As one who is constantly in search of that elusive improvement, I’ve stood in many a golf superstore and felt exactly the same way.
As it turns out, the advice I gave him isn’t bad advice for business. You see, I’ve worked with companies who thought they could buy their way to a better game too. Let me share with you what I told my friend and I think you’ll see how it applies to the companies as well. Continue reading →

Have you ever spent time on a simulator? This is the time of year when I find myself doing just that: using a treadmill instead walking in the fresh air, hitting balls on an indoor range instead of the golf course. Maybe you play Wii Sports or something using the Kinect. There are all kinds of devices which simulate a real-world experience. They have them in business too, and they suffer from the same flaws. I know I wrote about the win by Bill Murray and D.A. Points yesterday and I apologize for more on the topic today. Sometimes, it seems, one screed on an even isn’t enough to cover the random thoughts going on in my brain and so I promise this will be the last golf blog (at least for this week).
As you might imagine, I follow a number of golf blogs and get golf headlines via RSS. What got me going was the widely circulated AP story on the tournament and it prompted a business (and life) thought I’d like to share. Continue reading →
