Avoiding Pink Discs

We went out for dinner Saturday night with another couple.  They, like me, are big carnivores and since I don’t get a lot of support on that here at Rancho Deluxe, the chance to hit a Brazilian Rodizio place is a big plus.  If you’ve never been, most of these places, sometimes known as churrascarias,  feature people walking around with various grilled meats on large, sword-like skewers.  They come to your table and slice off whatever you want.  In addition, most of these joints have fantastic salad bars which can serve as meals all by themselves (and in the case of the vegetarians in your party, do!).

As I was at the salad bar, something stuck me which I’d like to share.  No, someone didn’t toss a roll at me – it’s more about one dish that was there. Continue reading

Raising Pulses

When I use my treadmill, I’m a responsible guy and use a cardiac monitor at the same time. Can’t have the old guys over-doing it!  I also have a theory about not doing anything sans appropriate music.  With that in mind, I put on the CD from two other old guys – Steve Winwood and Eric Clapton. The toured together a while ago and have a live CD from the Madison Square Garden show – it’s really good.

So there I am cruising along at my usual pace and listening to the music.  All of a sudden, the treadmill starts slowing down and telling me “reducing speed to lower heart rate.”  I was doing my usual workout at a speed I hit all the time and yet for some reason, my heartbeat had elevated itself out of the acceptable range.  Not by much, but it was higher.  The culprit? The Timer

I probably ought to be saving this post for Friday since what triggered it is a food thought. Then again, most of my thinking seems to be triggered by food thoughts as my waistline demonstrates.
One thing you must have in a kitchen is a timer. I have several, including one which can time 4 things at once (it’s very cool until you forget which time applies to what dish). You set a timer so that you know when things are done. That’s the big difference in digital – nothing’s ever done. Continue reading
