Sometimes I’m convinced that the most successful businesses have no idea what they’re doing. Oh sure, if you asked an executive about their strategy, he or she would probably give you whatever is in their planning document verbatim, but I think that’s crap. I think they’re telling you what they believe to be the truth but in fact may only be accurate in their minds for that moment. Instead, I think the most successful companies are masters of dealing with the utter chaos of the business world and not being too anchored to any one detail of a plan. Instant Replay
I was watching the Chicago Bears play the Detroit Lions last night. I’m not sure if you watched, but the first quarter of the game was a mess – lots of penalties and a couple of challenges to rulings on the field using instant replay. I flashed back to when the NFL put in the current replay system. Some of us at the networks were a little concerned that suddenly what we were doing could become part of the game instead of us just covering what was happening since they use TV coverage to look at the calls. The concern was about a missed camera angle or a technical problem changing the outcome.
That hasn’t been an issue for the most part, and the replay system has been a good thing in my mind. After all, events move very fast on the field and it’s not always easy to get it right all the time. Sound like your work day? It does to me, and it raises a thought. Continue reading

Super Duper
I have a food question for you to end the week. What do blueberries, salmon, and walnuts have in common? No, they’re not the ingredients to some fabulous new dish I’ve concocted. They’re among the top foods which some nutritionists call “superfoods.” The reason they’re labelled this way is that they are among the foods that contain high amounts of some substances – phytonutrients for those of you needing a big word for a crossword puzzle – that might just confer a bunch of health benefits. Blueberries, for example, have a ton of antioxidants, phytoflavinoids, potassium and vitamin C, which people who know about this stuff say lower your risk of heart disease and cancer and are also anti-inflammatory. Impressive little guys!
